Hi! This is one of the more interesting topics that I have encountered here on Thank you for your interest in animation. Let me help you out.
There are mainly fives types of animation. They are categorized according to the styles and techniques used. You may already be familiar with most of them since animation is very prevalent in TV, movies, social media, and other media platforms.Types of AnimationTraditional Animation. This is also known as 2D or cel animation. They are drawn page by page to convey each movement or change in motion. Hand drawn was the traditional way of making animations and it was very laborious and required patience and attention to detail. Disney's old cartoons and movies were made this way. An example of traditional animation are flip book animations wherein each page contains a drawing. When you flip the pages from start to end, the drawings come to life as one animated scene. 2D Vector-Based Animation. Do not confuse this with traditional 2D animation. This type of animation is done on the computer by using vector images. Transition, motion, and interpolation is applied on these images to give them movement. Some examples are old computer flash games such as Pac-man, Xatax, City Jumper, and Reverse Play. Some famous 2D-animated films are 3D Animation. Also done through computers, these are more complicated. Animators use digital or real-life models for poses or for creating character features. The images are then translated to a digital image that they can manipulate using a software or program. The software plays a part in creating motion, fluidity, and depth through interpolation. Examples of 3D animation are movies that use CGI such as The Avengers movies, the Harry Potter movies, and even 3D-animated cartoons such as Tangled and Frozen. Motion graphics. This type of animation can be done by almost anyone. To put it simply, it is applying motion to texts, logos, static images and video clips. You may even do it on your cellphone using any of the various apps available for download. Some examples are adding transition on Powerpoint Slides, movie credits, and even the new trend of moving Instagram photos.Stop Motion. The process of making stop motion animation starts by arranging still objects such as clay, figures, and still objects and taking a picture. Every movement you want to be conveyed requires a new arrangement and a separate picture. Once you have all the pictures you need, you will stitch them into a video. Some examples of stop motion animations are the movies The Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, and Shaun the Sheep.Similarities between Traditional and 2D Vector-Based AnimationBoth are only two-dimensional, they cannot convey depth. Some animations need both traditional and 2D vector-based animation to be brought to lifeBoth requires skill and patience to create seamless motion and transition
