To determine that a chemical equation is correctly balance, you have to count the number of atoms of elements in both reactant and product and make sure that they are equal.We balance the chemical equation since atoms are not destroyed in the process and the mass is conserved. The mass of the reactant is equal to the mass of the product which also means, the number of atoms of elements in both the product and reactant are equal.

Example:

To Balance the equation:

                       Fe    + 3NaBr  ⇒     FeBr₃  +  3Na                          ↓          ↓    ↓            ↓   ↓            ↓

                           1 Fe     3 Na   3 Br       1 Fe   3 Br      3 Na

                                                         Fe = 1                    Fe = 1                                  Na = 3                   Na = 3                                          Br = 3                   Br = 3

The atoms of each element in both reactant and product are equal.
